Fig. 1 - S2 (12.02.2022) - Pitch Lake lies in La Brea in S-W Trinidad. It's the World's largest natural deposit of asphalt with ~10 million tons.
The oil lighter elements evaporate under the hot tropical sun, leaving the heavier asphalt. In the 1840s, kerosene was first obtained from a sample of Pitch Lake bitumen.
Fig. 2 - S2 (12.02.2022) - The lake covers ~40 ha and it is 75 m deep. Pitch Lake is a popular tourist attraction and is mined for asphalt.
