Fig. 1 - S3 OLCI (20.10.2016 & 20.05.2017); S3 SRAL (17.08.2017) - The Central Highlands are a mountainous region in central Madagascar.
They include the contiguous part of the island's interior above 800 m altitude. Once densely forested, they are a defining feature of Madagascar, home to their historic capital at Antananarivo.
Fig. 2 - S1 (19, 24 & 26.08.2023); S2 (20.05.2023) - Madagascar is the fourth-largest island in the world and is renowned for its high level of endemism.
Born from the prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana, Madagascar separated from the Indian landmass about 84–92 million years ago. This long history of separation from other continents has allowed plants and animals on the island to evolve in relative isolation.
