Pushed by strong wind, a fire broke out about 30km north of Athens, spreading across vegetation turned dry by temperatures that surpassed 40C last week.

The Acropolis in Athens was closed to the public when temperatures were deemed dangerously high. Greece is poised for other heatwave once winds drop, Greek meteorologists saying the worst is yet to come.
